Amplifying Queer Voices: Alice Oseman

Alice Oseman, Netflix

Alice Oseman, best known for the Heartstopper series, is an English Author, Illustrator and Screenwriter. After writing her first novel at 17 years old, and publishing it at 20, they have gone on to write four more YA novels, and multiple spin offs from the Heartstopper comics.

To many, especially teenagers, the Heartstopper series opened up a new conversation of sexuality, discrimination, eating disorders and gender identity. The first 7 volumes are available online to read for free, with the eighth and final volume coming late 2025. Whilst promoting their book Loveless, Oseman opened up about being Asexual and Aromantic, as well as using she/they pronouns, but isn’t “tied to any labels”. She explores the topic in the Loveless, which is “not an autobiographical book, but it does draw on a lot of experiences”.

The Heartstopper series has gone on to be adapted into a Netflix series. It follows Nick and Charlie navigating high school and a first relationship. Many have described it as the most wholesome series ever made – and I’d have to agree. The series is due to conclude with a movie, and fans are excited. The series also has an amazing soundtrack featuring Orla Gartland, Beabadoobee and Olivia Dean. If you’re having a bad day, go and binge watch as many episodes as you can in one day – you’ll feel a lot better.
